Design Collaboration with Nipun Prabhkar

Client Mr. Rajeev Sethi

Gumla is a tribal district in Jharkhand known for its unique local art, craft, and architecture. Under the guidance of Mr. Rajiv Sethi, a creative project was undertaken to develop a structure that blends contemporary design with sustainable architecture, while also incorporating the traditional Gumla architectural style.

The project, led by AAGAUR, involved extensive research and study of the local art, craft, and architecture. This research paved the way for a whole new creative development. The structure that was constructed serves as a space for education and culture. It can be used as a public library, a venue for cultural events, and also provides two rooms for scholars to stay.

In order to honor and showcase the local craftsmanship, the structure incorporates elements created by local craftspeople and artisans. The two front columns, for example, were made with the help of stone makers who specialize in creating 'Atta chakkis' (traditional stone grinders). The other column is made in the Dhokra art style, a traditional metal casting technique.

To add uniqueness and sustainability, mosaic tiles made from waste tiles were used to decorate the walls of the bathroom space. Additionally, mud plaster was used to enhance the aesthetics and introduce colorful elements. Boulder rocks were also utilized as seating fixtures on the walls, and reinterpretations of Aalas (niches) were incorporated as decorative elements.

Overall, the structure stands as a testament to the local craftsmanship and architecture of Gumla. It reflects a successful collaboration between the project team and designer Nipun Prabhakar (Dhamada). The project was completed in June 2022 and is located in Gumla, Jharkhand.
