Courtyard Cluster
Iyer's Residence
Design Collaboration "Dhamada"
The structure in question was originally composed of three separate residences, each with its own courtyard. However, there was a desire to imbue the current structure with a natural ambiance.
The building is characterized by a load-bearing structure, employing a Rat trap bond technique that enhances insulation and comfort throughout the different seasons. On-site, stabilized adobe work has been implemented, and the roofs feature domes and vaults that vary according to the specific areas of the structure. To promote sustainability and repurposing, recycled doors and windows sourced from Khandwa, Madhya Pradesh, have been incorporated.
A distinctive feature of the verandah includes a Fersi design, which adds a unique touch to the overall structure. This design also provides ample shade while occupying less width. The flooring is comprised of galicha tiles, known for their health benefits, and interestingly, these tiles are produced in-house, showcasing a commitment to quality and craftsmanship.
The walls are finished with lime plasters, combining both old and new techniques to achieve a desired aesthetic. The aim was to create a collaborative space that seamlessly blends traditional and contemporary construction methods.
The collaboration on this project involves designer Nipun Prabhakar, whose expertise and vision contribute to its success. Spanning an area of 4500 square feet, this structure is located in Bilkisganj, Madhya Pradesh.
Completed by March 2023, this project serves as an embodiment of the harmonious integration of nature, sustainability, and innovative design principles. It showcases a commitment to preserving and celebrating the rich architectural heritage of Madhya Pradesh while embracing modern advancements.
